Dates to remember for 2010 Mummers

Mummers Kick off Party Downtown at the Yucca, April 25, 2010 at 5:30. Auditions for the show to follow. Auditions will continue Monday April 26th, and Tuesday April 27th.

Load in of the set is Sat May 22nd.

Advance Reservations to groups Larger than 10, Wednesday March 24th.

Box office opens to the Public Wednesday May 26th.

Opening Night is Friday June 11th.

Shows run every Friday and Saturday from June 11, to Sept 4. Show time is 8:00pm.

Mummers Reunion Night is Sat July 3rd. Curtain at 7:00pm

Final Performance is Saturday September 4th.

Yes, that is right, Summer Mummers is starting to ramp up for this coming season. Scripts have been submitted and the selection process will begin the first week of February, with initial read throughs to follow. Summer Mummers will be here before you know it. So get out your mugs and get ready for popcorn and fun in the sun.

Script Submission Deadline

Script submissions for the 2010 Season will be taken from now thru January. Anyone wishing to submit a script for consideration must have it turned into the Midland Community Theatre Business office by Friday January 29th. All scripts submitted will then be handed over to the script selection committee for further consideration. Recommendations of the script selection committee will be forwarded to the Board of Summer Mummers for final approval.

What is Summer Mummers?

Summer Mummers is a live show performed on the stage of the Historic Yucca Theatre in Downtown Midland every Fri and Sat during the summer. The show is currently running and will conclude for the season Sat Sep 5th. The show starts at 8pm so you want to get there a bit early to get something to drink and some popcorn for throwing. All seats are reserved so you can get there a bit early and check out the Yucca theatre and the Summer Mummer Experience! The Yucca theatre is something to see itself. Completed in 1929 it's architecture has an Assyrian themed movie palace look. Featuring gilded lotus columns on either side of the proscenium arch on the stage and a pair of Lamassu on each side of the lower organ loft, representing a "stylized" pair who guarded the entrance to the throne room of King Sargon II's palace at Dur-Sharrukin (modern-day Khorsabad, Iraq). A lamassu is a protective spirit, ours are shown as a composite being with the head of a human, the body of a lion, and the wings of a bird. When viewed from the side, the creature appears to be walking; when viewed from the front, to be standing still. The show itself is a melodrama augmented with a locally shot and produced movieola

The second part of the show is the Olio! And while the Olio is pretty slick, it should not be confused with the oleo used on your bread. Ours is a collection of short skits and songs designed to engender the greatest of enjoyment from a "seasoned" crowd of Mummers. (its a variety show with a beautiful card girl, equally attractive dancing ladies, and many other local talents) The show is live and geared toward a fun loving crowd. (show is for adults, no one under 16 is recommended) Show runs from 8 pm to approximately 11:30 pm this year. Depending on . . . well many things. Just as the best parties are never fully scripted Mummers is a slightly different show each night.

Ticket Prices for this years show are the same as last year. $20.00 per person in the Pit. $15.00 per person in the house. $10.00 per person in the balcony. and $5.00 per person in the "Peanut Gallery" which is Theatre style seating in the upper balcony.

2009 Load in / cleanup

The Summer Mummer Load in / clean up is scheduled for Saturday May 16, 2009.

Calling all mummers to come help spruce up the Yucca getting it ready for the show, and to load in the sets for this years production "Body Slammed among the Bovines". Hope to see ya there!

Green Room Renovation

Staci LaPlante and Skeet Doss have been working hard on renovating the "Green Room" and "Downstairs Dressing rooms at the Yucca" .

Staci has been working for about 2 years now on plans for a complete remodel and Skeet has been busy this past year getting money to do the job. Due to generous cash donations from Summer Mummer volunteers and supporters Skeet has informed us that we now have the money and work is to commence immediately to renovate the entire area. These renovations are to be complete before the show this year. And may actually be ready for other shows that rent the Yucca. If you see Staci or Skeet be sure and thank them for all their hard work. This is a project that is sure to be enjoyed by all.

Summer Mummers show dates for 2009 are from Friday June 12 to Saturday September 5th.

Shows are every Friday and Saturday during that time frame.

Saturday July 4th is the Annual Summer Mummer Reunion Night, If you are a current Summer Mummer or have ever been one, make plans to come down and see the show with all your friends.

Tickets are not on sale at this time. More details as they become available.

The New Curtain

The 59th season of SummerMummers was the retirement year for the curtain painted by Art Cole. The original curtain was installed when the mummers moved to the Yucca Theatre. It complemented the set built by Bill Larkin in 1981.

The iconic curtain style will be carried on in the new one painted this year by set designer Eric Beek. The ads were hand painted by Duryn Sandburg, Marcy Sandburg, Laura Abbott, Tiffany Henley, Connie Barnes, and others.

The Melodrama is a unique theatrical experience, invented in the USA. Nobody does it quite as uniquely as The Summer Mummers, the oldest existing organization of its kind in the country. The Summer Mummers provide their own brand of entertainment to thousands of patrons each summer, while providing the Midland Community Theatre (MCT) with a substantial portion of their yearly operating budget.

The Summer Mummers are an all-volunteer group. From the producers and directors to the popcorn sellers, each and every one is there giving of their time and energy to help out. Of course the fact that they have a great time makes it something that keeps them coming back, many of them for decades!
